Part of the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games program, this half dollar celebrates women's soccer. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics hosted the first-ever women's Olympic soccer tournament, with the U.S. women's team winning the inaugural gold medal before 76,481 fans at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. The obverse features two women playing soccer, one kicking the ball, while the reverse displays the mark of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games featuring the Olympic Flame, Torch, Rings, and '100' for the Centennial. Designed by Richard T. LaRoche/Dean McCullen. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The soccer half dollar commemorates a historic milestone in women's sports and is particularly popular among collectors of women's athletics memorabilia.
