1987-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Exhibiting medium spread and extra thickness on the date along with light extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST and notched lower right corners of LIBERTY, DDO-002 on the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent presents a multi-element doubling profile that engages several diagnostic zones simultaneously. Cataloged as UVC-2404 and DMR-016, this variety's spread pattern reveals a hub doubling event that affected design elements at different distances from the pivot point to varying degrees — stronger on the date, moderate on the motto, and subtle on the right side of LIBERTY. The "extra thickness" classification describes doubling where the secondary impression overlaps the primary closely enough that the letters appear broader or heavier rather than distinctly separated, while the notched corners on LIBERTY indicate localized areas where the offset was sufficient to produce visible step-like irregularities at letter terminations. Multiple affected design elements allow attributors to triangulate the direction and magnitude of the hub offset, since a single rotation or shift should produce predictable distortion across all obverse elements proportional to their position relative to the pivot. Denver produced over 4.0 billion cents in 1987, yet only two DDO varieties have been cataloged from that vast output, illustrating how hub doubling remained an infrequent anomaly even in the final years of multi-squeeze hubbing. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
