1987-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Documented by the Wexler team and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-II+VI and Coppercoins 1987D-1DO-001, WDDO-001 on the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent shows a moderate spread towards the center on the date — a Class II+VI combination indicating both rotated and distorted hub doubling contributed to the final image. The dual-class attribution means this variety resulted from a hubbing event where the working die shifted both rotationally and with a component of design distortion, producing a complex doubling signature that engages multiple mechanical axes. Obverse die markers include a V-shaped die scratch above the mint mark and numerous north-south die scratches to the right of Lincoln's profile, providing attributors with secondary confirmation points beyond the doubling itself. On the reverse, a short southwest-to-northeast die gouge sits right of the top of the O in ONE, with an additional die scratch running from the center bar of E in ONE to the upper left of the C in CENT. These reverse markers are essential for confirming the specific die pair, since the obverse doubling alone might overlap with other varieties in profile. The Wexler team's documentation provides the most detailed die marker analysis available for 1987-D doubled dies. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1987-D mintage of 4,007,632,740 cents.
