1971-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-017

Description

Struck in 40% silver as a proof issue, WDDO-017 on the 1971-S Eisenhower Dollar exhibits Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at 7:00, visible on LIBERTY and slightly on IN, the TR of TRUST, and the date. The obverse carries the distinctive "Peg Leg R" — a shortened right leg on the R in LIBERTY that serves as a prominent die marker. Additional obverse markers include short diagonal die scratches inside the O of GOD, to the right of the bottom of the G in GOD, and between the bottoms of the T and R in TRUST, along with a small die gouge (dot) on the left side of the upper ear. The reverse is itself a doubled die, listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1971-S $1 Pr WDDR-015. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1971-S $1 Pr WDDO-017, this proof silver Eisenhower Dollar belongs to the first year of Frank Gasparro's design. Class V pivoted hub doubling produces a rotational spread that increases in magnitude with distance from the pivot, explaining why LIBERTY shows more prominent doubling than the elements closer to the 7:00 pivot. The Peg Leg R has become one of the most recognized Ike Dollar markers.
