Description

A notable COMBO variety, this 1971-S Proof Silver Eisenhower Dollar pairs a doubled die obverse (WDDO-016) with a doubled die reverse independently cataloged as 1971-S $1 Pr WDDR-011. Struck in 40% silver clad at the San Francisco Mint as a proof issue, this coin comes from the inaugural year of the Eisenhower Dollar series. The obverse shows Class II tripling with spread toward center on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY, meaning three overlapping hub impressions are detectable. A distinctive Peg Leg R — where the right leg of the R in LIBERTY appears truncated or malformed — provides an immediately recognizable diagnostic. Additional obverse markers include short diagonal die scratches inside the O of GOD, a light die scratch running south from the top right of the second T in TRUST to the top of the first 1 in the date, and light die pitting right of the lower E in WE. The reverse die is itself a doubled die (WDDR-011), making both sides independently attributable. COMBO varieties on proof Eisenhower Dollars from the first year of issue hold particular appeal for series specialists.
