Description

Die clashes on Eisenhower Dollars create dramatic impressions due to the coin's large diameter, and this 1971-D Denver Mint example records two separate abraded clash events. Attributed by MadDieClashes, a dual clash mark appears on Ike's forehead from the eagle's talon where the reverse die struck the obverse die twice without a planchet. The first U in UNUM left a clash mark, and the chin area was clashed twice under the earth. The top of Ike's head clashed into LL of DOLLAR traveling upward to the first crater on the right. Die dots appear between D of GOD and W of WE, and a die gouge sits under A of STATES. Both clash events were abraded — the Mint polished the die to remove marks, but ghost remnants remain visible under magnification. The 1971-D was the inaugural year of the Eisenhower Dollar designed by Frank Gasparro, making die clash varieties from this first year of particular interest to series specialists.
