Description

Documented in "The Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower Dollars" as DDO-001, this Wexler-attributed 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar WDDO-001 exhibits Class V clockwise pivoted hub doubling affecting an extensive area of the obverse: IGWT (IN GOD WE TRUST), the date, LIB of LIBERTY, the neck, chin, nose, and the designer's initials. Class V doubling results from the hub rotating slightly during impression, creating a curved displacement pattern where elements farther from the pivot point show greater separation. The breadth of affected areas — spanning motto, date, partial inscription, and multiple portrait features — indicates the pivot produced visible effects across nearly the entire obverse. Frank Gasparro designed the Eisenhower Dollar (1971-1978), featuring Dwight D. Eisenhower on the obverse and an eagle landing on the moon on the reverse, struck in copper-nickel clad for circulation at 38.1mm diameter. This Denver Mint regular strike is the primary doubled die obverse for the 1971-D date. No die markers have been noted on either side.
