Description

The "R" suffix in CU-100c-1971D-03R identifies this as a reverse rim cud on the 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar, where a piece of the reverse die broke away at the rim to create a raised featureless blob on Gasparro's Apollo 11 eagle design. The reverse depicts an eagle landing on the Moon with an olive branch in its talons and Earth visible in the background, commemorating the Apollo 11 mission of July 1969. A die fracture along the rim of this reverse interrupted whatever portion of the lunar landing scene fell within the break zone, replacing detailed engraving with a smooth, raised mass of metal.
