CU-100c-1971D-02 Rim Cud

Description

Struck during the first year of Eisenhower Dollar production, this 1971-D obverse rim cud captures a die failure on Frank Gasparro's portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. A piece of the obverse die fractured at the rim and broke away, leaving a raised featureless area of unstruck metal along the coin's edge where the design should appear. The Eisenhower Dollar debuted in 1971 as the first dollar coin produced since the Peace Dollar series ended in 1935, making die varieties from this inaugural year historically noteworthy. Denver Mint struck the majority of circulation Eisenhower Dollars, and the large 38.1mm diameter placed considerable stress on the dies during striking, contributing to die failures including rim cuds.
