1946 Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-1946-01
Error
Description
Cataloged as ADC-1c-1946-01, this typical die clash on the 1946 Lincoln Wheat Cent displays clash evidence on both obverse and reverse, discovered by Mike Antenucci. Die clashes occur when a planchet fails to feed into the press, allowing the obverse and reverse dies to strike each other directly and transfer incuse impressions of their opposing designs onto each die face. On the obverse, the clash is visible behind Lincoln's head where the interior outline of the right wheat ear from the reverse appears alongside the O from OF — ghostly reverse design elements embedded in the obverse die. The N from CENT shows at Lincoln's throat, providing an additional clash marker. On the reverse, a nicely defined outline of Lincoln's head and hair detail is visible, representing the obverse design transferred during the die-to-die contact. The 1946 date marks the first full year of post-World War II cent production at the Philadelphia Mint, when operations had returned to peacetime capacity and standard bronze composition. Cataloged by MadDieClashes under the systematic die clash classification framework, this variety offers collectors a clear and well-defined example of the die clash phenomenon, with unusually complete transferred design elements visible on both sides.
