1971-D Typical Die Clash TDC-100C-1971D-01
Error
Description
Cataloged by MadDieClashes as TDC-100c-1971D-01, this 1971-D Eisenhower dollar presents an unabraded die clash — a clash where the transferred design elements were not subsequently polished or abraded from the die face, leaving strong, undiminished clash marks on struck coins. The clash marks include a strong U from UNUM and a talon of the eagle visible in the forehead area of Dwight Eisenhower's portrait on the obverse. This specimen was documented courtesy of Robert Kirkland of Florida. An earlier die state shows the clash marks even more prominently, including one not previously observed: a die clash from the eagle's wing visible in the field in front of Eisenhower's nose. On the reverse, both the front and back portions of Eisenhower's head can be seen clashed into the reverse die, documenting the bilateral nature of die clashing where both dies simultaneously receive transferred impressions from each other. The 1971-D Eisenhower dollar was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel clad composition, weighing 22.68 grams with a diameter of 38.1 mm — the same large format as the Morgan and Peace dollars. The Eisenhower dollar was designed by Frank Gasparro, with the obverse portraying President Eisenhower and the reverse depicting the Apollo 11 mission insignia eagle landing on the moon. Unabraded clashes are particularly valued by clash collectors because the full strength of the transferred design remains visible, unlike abraded clashes where mint personnel attempted to remove the evidence through die polishing, leaving only faded remnants.
