1970-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
DDO-006 on the 1970-S Jefferson nickel presents light doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST with the notable characteristic of increasing spread in a clockwise direction — meaning the magnitude of displacement grows progressively as you read the motto from left to right (or clockwise around the arc). This increasing-CW diagnostic is more specific than simple spread descriptions and reflects a rotational component to the hub misalignment where the angular displacement was not uniform across the die face. The San Francisco Mint produced approximately 238.8 million business-strike nickels in 1970, one of the highest S-mint production figures in the series, reflecting continued high demand for circulating coinage. Classified as UVC-1743 with die marriage DMR-033 under VarietyVista, DDO-006 is one of at least six documented doubled die obverses for this date. The increasing clockwise spread pattern can be verified by measuring the separation between primary and secondary impressions at multiple points along the motto — the displacement should be minimal at the left end and progressively wider moving rightward.
