1970-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Struck at the San Francisco Mint as a business strike — not a proof — DDO-003 on the 1970-S Jefferson Nickel carries light spread on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date. Die markers UVC-1373 and DMR-016 fingerprint this working die. During this era, the San Francisco facility produced both proof coins for collector sets and circulation-quality business strikes for commerce, and this variety originates from the business strike production. The S mintmark appears on the reverse to the right of Monticello in the standard position. Light spread on the three primary obverse elements indicates moderate hub displacement during die manufacture. Felix Schlag's design provides consistent diagnostic reference points across the series — LIBERTY arcing along the left field, the star adjacent to the date, and the date numerals below Jefferson's bust. The 1970-S nickel was struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel).
