Description
Part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series, the 1970 (D) Jefferson Nickel is a nickel from the Denver Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 515.5 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 71% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. The 1970-D has a relatively low mintage compared to neighboring dates, making it slightly scarcer in high grades. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $12 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4084.
