1970-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Discovered by Tanner Scott, the 1970-D Jefferson Nickel WDDO-001 exhibits Class V pivoted hub doubling with nice spread on LIBERTY, the star, the date, IN GOD, and the lower portion of Jefferson's queue. The pivoting mechanism creates a spread that varies in intensity across the die face, with the design elements furthest from the pivot axis typically showing the strongest displacement. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge near the rim to the right of the lower portion of Jefferson's queue. On the reverse, a slanted die scratch runs from beneath the crossbar of the first T of STATES to the A of STATES, and a die scratch appears near the rim to the right of the F of OF. The spread across five distinct obverse elements—LIBERTY, star, date, IN GOD, and queue—provides collectors with multiple confirmation points. The queue gouge is particularly useful as a quick initial diagnostic, sitting in an area where the doubling itself is also visible on the lower hair detail.
