Die markers UVC-1368 and DMR-005 confirm this working die. The increasing left-to-right spread is the diagnostic hallmark of pivoted doubling: the secondary hub impression was rotated slightly relative to the primary around a pivot point located to the left of the affected text, producing minimal offset near the pivot and increasingly larger displacement at letters farther from it. On STATES OF AMERICA, this means the S shows the least doubling while the final A shows the most — a measurable gradient that both confirms the Class V mechanism and provides a built-in authentication feature, since any uniform offset across the full inscription would indicate a different doubling class. As DDR-001, this variety holds the primary doubled die reverse designation for the 1970 Denver Mint nickel, marking it as the most significant or first-documented reverse variety for this date-mint. The 1970-D was struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) at the Denver Mint, with the small D to the right of Monticello on Felix Schlag's reverse.
