Error
Description
A D/D Tilted variety from the Denver Mint, this 1970-D Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista and awaits specimen submission for new color digital photos. Die markers UVC-488 / DMR-004 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with obverse at MDS and a die gouge connecting the upper CA of AMERICA at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die gouge bridging the C and A of AMERICA on the reverse creates a distinctive linkage marker between two letters. The tilted displacement produces non-parallel overlap where the secondary D is angularly offset relative to the primary. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1970-D was struck during the period when mintmark application was still performed manually by hand-punching at the Philadelphia Mint before die distribution.
