Description

Complementing the primary WRPM-001, this second cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1969-S Jefferson Nickel was attributed by the Wexler Team and documents another working die where San Francisco's hand-punching left evidence of mintmark repositioning. Multiple RPM varieties for the 1969-S regular strike confirm that San Francisco prepared a meaningful number of circulation dies alongside its growing proof program, each requiring an individually applied S mintmark. While WRPM-001 holds the benchmark designation, WRPM-002 carries its own unique repunching characteristics — a distinct combination of primary and secondary punch positions differentiating it from every other 1969-S RPM die. San Francisco's dual role in 1969, serving collectors through proof sets and commerce through regular strikes, created parallel streams of working dies prepared by the same engravers using identical methods. Regular-strike S-mint Jefferson Nickels from this period are sometimes overlooked by collectors focused on proof issues, yet they preserve the same mintmark application imprecisions. Examination of the S mintmark beside Monticello under 5x magnification should reveal the diagnostic overlap.
