Description

The 1969-D Washington Quarter WMHR-001 documents the SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse doubling on a Denver Mint business strike, classified under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. The SD-1 pointed-leaf diagnostic — the leaf directly left of the arrowheads showing a pointed tip — applies uniformly to all coins from all dies produced from this master hub, whether struck at Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco, because master hub doubling propagates through the entire die-making chain. The 1969-D business strike is a copper-nickel clad quarter, the composition in use since 1965. The center-directed spread characteristic of this hub appears on QUARTER DOLLAR and on the lower wreath elements, with the doubling diminishing from left to right across the legend. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
