1969-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

A southward D mintmark repunch identifies RPM-002 on the 1969-D Washington Quarter, with the secondary D impression displaced south of the primary. The 1969-D Washington Quarter was struck on the clad composition planchet — copper-nickel bonded to a copper core — that replaced the 90% silver composition beginning with 1965 production. By 1969 the clad quarter had been in production for four years, and Denver Mint dies continued to carry hand-punched mintmarks as they had throughout the silver era. The reverse design for this die is noted as RDV-004, identifying a specific reverse die variety for the Washington clad quarter series. Die markers are cross-referenced as UVC-1185 and DMR-008. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse at early die state. Stage B was mid-die state (unconfirmed). Stage C was late die state (unconfirmed). No additional cross-references are noted. The southward repunch on RPM-002 is visible beneath the primary D mintmark and is most readily seen on early-die-state examples before wear begins to fill in the secondary impression.
