1968-S Variety WMHR-002
Error
Description
WMHR-002 on the 1968-S Washington Quarter is the Proof issue of the SD-2 Working Master Hub Reverse variety, struck with polished dies at the San Francisco Mint. The SD-2 designation, under the CONECA classification system, identifies the second distinct master hub used during 1968-1974 quarter production — distinguished from SD-1 by the leaf diagnostic: where SD-1 carries a pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads, SD-2 carries a rounded leaf in the same position. Both SD-1 and SD-2 represent master hub doubling events, meaning the doubling was impressed into the hub and passed identically to every working die produced from it. On this 1968-S Proof issue, the center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath reflects the SD-2 hub characteristics. Proof surface quality allows the rounded-leaf diagnostic to be examined under optimal conditions. Cross-reference: CONECA SD-2; WMHR-002, 1968-S Proof.

- Discovered by Various Cross References: CONECA: SD-2-R-II-C+VI Comments: Because this was a master hub it was intended to be used over a period of several years. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1970 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the other doubled master hub that leave is pointed at the top.
