1968-S Variety WMHR-001

Description

WMHR-001 on the 1968-S Washington Quarter is the Proof issue of the SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse variety, struck with polished dies and burnished planchets at the San Francisco Mint. Cross-referenced as CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI, this variety shares the exact same master hub doubling that produced WMHR-001 entries on 1968-P and 1968-D business strikes — the doubling resides in the working master hub itself and was transferred identically to all working dies made from it, whether used for Proof or business strike production. The SD-1 diagnostic is the pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads. On this Proof specimen, the center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath displays with the enhanced contrast of Proof surfaces, making the doubling visually accessible under examination. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
