Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1968-S 25¢ Pr WDDR-002 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-001, this proof Washington Quarter exhibits a very close counterclockwise (CCW) spread on USA and QUARTER DOLLAR — a rotational doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression was pivoted slightly counterclockwise relative to the primary, creating a subtle arc of displacement that increases with distance from the rotation center. The "very close" descriptor indicates the separation between primary and secondary images is minimal, requiring careful examination under higher magnification to confirm. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die scratch between the centers of the 1 and 9 of the date, a small die gouge between the bottoms of the R and T in LIBERTY, and strong mechanical doubling observed on the examined specimen — though mechanical doubling (strike doubling) is a post-strike artifact distinct from the hub doubling variety itself. Reverse markers include a small die gouge touching the bottom right of the D in UNITED and a die scratch between the two leaves above the R in DOLLAR. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan and struck as a proof at the San Francisco Mint in 1968, the first year proof production moved to San Francisco from Philadelphia. This coin was struck in clad composition (copper-nickel clad layers over a copper core) weighing approximately 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter — the 1968-S being the first year of San Francisco proof quarter production after the Coinage Act of 1965 resumed proof coinage. The Crawford CDDR-001 cross-reference indicates this is the primary variety in Crawford's doubled die catalog for the 1968-S proof quarter.
