1968-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Second cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1968 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime, this RPM-002 documents a misaligned secondary impression of the D mint mark punched into the working die before production. Repunched mintmarks on clad-era Roosevelt Dimes arise from the manual placement of mint marks onto working dies, a process used through 1989 before the Mint began including the mint mark on the master die. The 1968-D is historically significant as the first year Roosevelt Dimes returned to Denver production after the 1965-1967 period when all coins were struck without mint marks to discourage hoarding during the silver-to-clad transition. John R. Sinnock's obverse design, in continuous production since 1946, transitioned to the copper-nickel clad composition beginning in 1965. Die Markers: UVC-508, DMR-003.
