1968-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

RPM-005 on the 1968-D Jefferson Nickel is a D/D West repunched mintmark variety catalogued by VarietyVista under die pair UVC-1760, DMR-009. The secondary D impression is displaced to the west of the final mintmark position, the ghost of the first punch visible to the left of the primary D. Die state progression covers two documented stages: Stage A is Early Die State, with a die gouge between the shoulder and knot on the obverse at this stage, and the reverse also in Early Die State. Stage B advances to Middle Die State. The shoulder-to-knot die gouge in Stage A is a localized obverse marker that precisely identifies this die at early production, before the gouge potentially wore or filled in later stages. The 1968-D Jefferson Nickel was struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy at the Denver Mint, after the Mint resumed D-mint nickel production following the emergency period of 1965-1967 when all coins were made without mintmarks.
