1968-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with D/D/D Southeast, Serifs displacement, this 1968 Denver Jefferson Nickel carries a triple-punched D where all three impressions are visible at the serif details. Die markers: UVC-434, DMR-004. Stage A: Die crack across lower bust — EDS; reverse is MDS. Stage B: MDS (unconfirmed). Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The early die state bust crack is noteworthy because cracks typically develop later, suggesting this die entered production with a pre-existing structural weakness. Triple-punched mintmarks document three separate contacts between punch and die face. Schlag's Jefferson Nickel was struck at Denver in 75% copper, 25% nickel (5.0 g, 21.21 mm). Mintmarks were manually applied until 1990, when integration into master dies permanently eliminated RPM varieties from subsequent production.
