1965 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Struck during the first year of clad composition for the Kennedy Half Dollar, DDO-006 on the 1965 issue shows medium spread on WE TRUST and light spread on the 65 of the date, the designer's initials, and the hair detail under R of LIBERTY. The 1965 Kennedy Half Dollar occupies a unique position in the series as the transitional year between 90% silver (1964) and the reduced 40% silver clad composition that would continue through 1970. Cataloged as UVC-331 with DMR-013, the variety has been documented across multiple die stages: Stage B shows a die scratch running from the lower chin southward, parallel with the neck, at mid-die state, while Stage C shows both obverse and reverse in late die state. No proof coins were produced in 1965 — this falls within the Special Mint Set period of 1965-1967, when the Mint suspended standard proof production. The medium spread on WE TRUST provides the most prominent confirmation point, while the lighter doubling on the date and designer's initials offers secondary verification.
