1965 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

The 1965 Kennedy Half Dollar WDDO-001 presents a Class V counter-clockwise spread pivoting at approximately the 10:00 position on the obverse. The doubling is distributed across multiple areas: IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the hair on the back of the head, and the letters RTY in LIBERTY all show the characteristic angular shift of a Class V pivot doubling. The Wexler Variety ID is 1965 50¢ WDDO-001. The 1965 Kennedy Half Dollar carries significance as the first year of the 40% silver clad composition, replacing the 90% silver composition of the 1964 issue and predating the move to a fully copper-nickel clad composition in 1971. Die markers on both sides document this variety. On the obverse, three parallel die scratches run south from the bottom of the E in WE. A short vertical die gouge is present to the right of the upper E in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a vertical die gouge appears just to the left of the upper first S in STATES. Collectors should confirm the Class V pivot spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date as the primary attribution points before cross-checking the die gouges and scratch locations.
