1965 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Catalogued in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1965 50c WDDR-001, this Kennedy half dollar variety was previously listed as WDDR-007 before being reassigned after recognition of a doubled working hub created gaps in the listing sequence. The variety displays a strong Class II spread towards the center on USA, the stars beneath USA, the stars above EPU, EPU itself, and the upper edge of the banner. A closer spread shows on HALF DOLLAR, the stars above HALF DOLLAR, and the four stars to the right of the eagle's head. Obverse die markers include parallel die scratches running SW from the upper I of IN. Reverse markers include a short die gouge from the lower right side of the star below the left A in STATES and a die gouge to the right of the lower first L in DOLLAR. The 1965 Kennedy half dollar is a 40% silver issue, part of the transitional series struck in silver from 1965 through 1970. Designed by Gilroy Roberts (obverse) and Frank Gasparro (reverse), Kennedy halves of this period are struck at Philadelphia without a mintmark. Class II doubled dies concentrate the spread on central devices, making them among the most visually compelling variety types.
