1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team under the designation 1964 10c WDDR-020 with a note that this variety is very similar to WDDR-031 (compare doubling), this doubled die reverse on a 1964 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Silver Dime shows a spread towards the center on the upper letters of AMERICA. Obverse die markers include a blunt tail on the 9 in the date and parallel die scratches running NNW/SSE through the N of IN and the G in GOD, with numerous additional die scratches running SSW/NNE throughout the obverse. On the reverse, a small die gouge (dot) can be found to the left of the O in ONE. The 1964 Roosevelt Dime is the final year of the 90% silver composition that had been standard since the denomination's introduction in 1946, struck in massive quantities — over 929 million at Philadelphia alone — as the Mint raced to produce enough silver coinage before the transition to clad composition in 1965. The blunt tail 9 on the obverse is a hub characteristic that helps narrow the die identification, and the extensive parallel die scratches across the obverse suggest this die received aggressive polishing, possibly to remove earlier die damage or extend its working life during the high-demand 1964 production year. Twenty documented doubled die reverses for this single date reflects its enormous mintage.
