1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1964 Roosevelt Dime doubled die reverse is cataloged as Wexler 1964 10-cent WDDR-002 and shows Class I clockwise spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DIME, with the strongest spread concentrated on the left half of the reverse. The obverse features a blunt tail 9 in the date, along with north-south die scratches across the entire field, in front of the eye, behind the ear, and northeast-southwest die scratches above the bust. The reverse shows north-south die scratches in the field toward the branches and torch holder. Class I hub doubling results from a rotational shift of the hub in the clockwise direction between impressions, producing spread that increases with distance from the pivot point. The 1964 Roosevelt Dime holds special significance as the last year of 90% silver composition for circulating dimes — the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the transition to copper-nickel clad, ending nearly two centuries of silver in American circulating coinage. The extensive die scratches across both obverse and reverse surfaces provide multiple secondary markers for attributing this specific die pair.
