1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-019
Error
Description
Closely related to DDR-018 in both doubling characteristics and die identification, VarietyVista's DDR-019 for the 1964 Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits a medium spread on all rim lettering manifesting as notched serifs closest to the rim — with the key diagnostic difference being a medium notch on the upper E of AMERICA compared to DDR-018's strong notch at the same location. The variety carries Universal Variety Code UVC-763 and Die Marriage Reference DMR-028, distinguishing it from DDR-018's UVC-452 and DMR-027 despite the similar doubling pattern. Three die states are documented: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), while Stages B and C (MDS and LDS) remain unconfirmed. Like DDR-018, the obverse is identified as ODV-011 with a blunt 9 in the date — but the different DMR number confirms this is a distinct die marriage despite sharing the same obverse design variant. The notched serif doubling pattern, where letters display small extra protrusions on the sides nearest the rim, is a hallmark of certain hub doubling mechanisms and provides a visually consistent diagnostic feature across multiple related varieties. The 1964 Roosevelt Dime was the final silver issue, and John Sinnock's classic design — with its detailed torch, branches, and encircling text — had been in continuous production since 1946. Nineteen cataloged doubled die reverses for the 1964 date reflects both the enormous production volume driven by the silver hoarding crisis and the systematic variety research that has been conducted on this pivotal final-year silver coin.
