1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-023
ErrorDescription
Counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 1:00 affects UNITED, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DIME, and the bottom of the olive branch on this 1964 Proof Roosevelt Dime, designated WDDR-023 by the Wexler Team. The pivot point determines how the doubling manifests: with the pivot at 1:00 (upper right), design elements furthest from that point — in the lower left of the die — show the strongest displacement, while elements near the pivot show minimal spread. The obverse shares a die marker with the companion WDDR-025 from batch 168: a blunt tail on the 9 in the date, though the reverse die is distinct, with a die scratch running across the upper D in UNITED. This die scratch serves as the primary reverse diagnostic separating WDDR-023 from the numerous other 1964 proof doubled die reverses. The 1964 proof Roosevelt Dime was the last struck in 90% silver before the composition change, and collectors stockpiled these final silver proofs in record quantities. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design was in its nineteenth year at 17.9mm. The twenty-third cataloged DDR for this proof date underscores the exceptional number of doubled die varieties produced during the frenetic 1964 proof output. Examine UNITED, ONE DIME, and the olive branch for CCW spread, and confirm with the die scratch on the D in UNITED.
