Cataloged as the second proof trail die obverse variety for the 1964 Lincoln cent, 1964PR-1DEO-002T records another instance of trail line formation on a proof die from the Philadelphia Mint. Trail dies exhibit fine parallel lines radiating from design elements, created during the hubbing process when metal flows under extreme pressure as the hub is pressed into the softened die blank. These trail marks are distinct from die scratches, polishing lines, or flow lines on the struck coin itself — they are features of the die that originated during its manufacture and appear identically on every coin struck from that die. The existence of multiple proof trail die obverse varieties for the 1964 date suggests that the conditions producing trail marks during proof die manufacture were not isolated anomalies but occurred with some regularity across the production run.
