Bearing the "Cud" title designation from the original data import while correctly classified under the "Spiked Head" error type, this SKH-1c-1964-02 is the second cataloged spiked head variety for the 1964 Lincoln cent, documented here in its proof strike form. Spiked head varieties are created when a die crack or die chip near Lincoln's head on the obverse die produces a raised projection or spike on the struck coin. The mechanism involves a small fragment of hardened die steel breaking away under the repeated stress of the striking process, leaving a recessed void in the die surface that captures metal from the planchet during each subsequent strike. The resulting raised spike on the coin's surface is a direct negative impression of the die's damage.
