1964 Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022

Description

Displaying a counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST with slight extra thickness on the date and LIBERTY, the 1964 Proof WDDO-022 is one of the more specifically described doubled die obverse varieties in the Proof-prefixed catalog for this date. The CCW spread direction indicates a Class V pivoted hub doubling or a Class I rotated hub doubling, depending on whether the secondary image radiates from a fixed pivot point or reflects a uniform rotation across the entire die face. The obverse carries a diagnostic die gouge well south of the right side of the 6 in the date at the rim. The reverse is richly supplied with die markers: a small die gouge between the I and T of UNITED, a strong concentric die scratch on the rim above the first T of STATES near the outer edge, a small die gouge above the second S of STATES, a concentric die scratch running from above ES of STATES to above AMERICA, and a vertical die gouge touching the rim centered below the C of CENT. This extensive array of reverse die markers provides collectors with numerous attribution confirmation points beyond the doubling pattern itself. The concentric die scratches on the rim suggest die preparation or polishing operations that left circular tooling marks in the die steel. Struck from the 1964 proof mintage of 3,950,762 cents on dies serving approximately 3,000 impressions, placing a natural ceiling on the surviving population of this variety. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.

• Obverse: A small die gouge can be found well south of the right side of the 6 of the date at the rim. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found near the rim above and between I and T of UNITED. A strong concentric die scratch is present on the rim very near the outer edge above the first T of STATES. A small die gouge can be found above the second S of STATES. A concentric die scratch is present on the rim running from above ES of STATES to above AMERICA. A vertical die gouge can be found touching the rim centered below C of CENT.
