Description

Documented by Scott Holliday and selected for inclusion in the prestigious "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties list, the 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-036 is among the most collectible doubled die varieties in the proof Jefferson Nickel series. The doubling is Class V Pivoted Hub with the pivot at K-9, and the very nice spread shows on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Class V doubling results when the hub pivots about a fixed point during hubbing, creating a fan-shaped spread that enlarges with distance from the pivot. Inclusion on the "Best Of" list indicates recognition by the Wexler reference system as exceptional in visual impact and collecting desirability. A light die scratch on the front portion of Jefferson's collar confirms the obverse die. The reverse die is cross-listed as 1964 Proof 5¢ WDDR-113, meaning this obverse die is paired with a documented doubled die reverse. The year 1964 was the final year of 90% silver Jefferson Nickels, lending additional historical significance to proof examples from this transitional year. The Wexler Variety ID is 1964 WDDO-036 Proof.
