1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Last year of proof Jefferson Nickels before the San Francisco transition in 1968, the 1964 Proof WDDO-003 carries Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) visible on IN GOD WE TRUST — the motto where hub distortion manifests as slightly shifted letter contours. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety also displays a die gouge right of the 4 in the date and a slanted die gouge left of P in PLURIBUS on the reverse, both confirming attribution beyond the doubling itself. Class II doubling results from working hub deformation during hubbing, producing a radial distortion pattern rather than the uniform directional shift of Class I. The 1964 proof production at Philadelphia represented the final chapter of a long tradition — beginning in 1968, proof coinage moved exclusively to the San Francisco Mint. Schlag's Jefferson portrait was in its twenty-seventh year, struck on 75% copper and 25% nickel at 21.2mm with the mirror fields and frosted devices characteristic of proof production. Inspect IN GOD WE TRUST for Class II spread, look for the die gouge right of the 4, and check the reverse for the slanted gouge left of P in PLURIBUS.
