1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-033
ErrorDescription
Strong but closely spaced Class II distorted hub doubling appears on the tops of the letters LIBER in LIBERTY on this proof 1964 Jefferson Nickel, attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDO-033 Proof. Class II doubling originates from distortion within the hub itself rather than from misalignment between hub and die, producing spread that follows the contours of design elements in a characteristic warped pattern. The obverse die marker is a vertical die gouge below the front tip of Jefferson's collar, while the reverse carries a slanted die gouge below the F of OF and is separately listed as WWHR-001. The pairing of documented obverse and reverse varieties on the same die set provides researchers with data about which dies were installed together in the press. With thirty-three documented doubled die obverses for the 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel, this date ranks among the most prolific for die varieties in the entire series — a consequence of the massive proof production that year as the U.S. Mint accelerated output ahead of the anticipated end of silver coinage. Philadelphia struck proof sets in enormous quantity during 1964, and the volume of dies consumed created abundant opportunities for hub anomalies to manifest across multiple die pairs.
