1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-030
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Brian A. Ribar, the 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-030 was formerly listed as WDDO-038, replacing the original WDDO-030 listing which was delisted because it was too minor. This variety exhibits a combined Class II and Class V (distorted and pivoted hub) doubling mechanism. Close Class V doubling shows on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, while very close Class II doubling appears on IN GOD. The obverse carries a heavy die gouge above the O of GOD as the primary attribution marker. No significant reverse markers have been noted. The dual-class mechanism produces a distinctive pattern where the pivoted spread on LIBERTY and the date manifests differently from the distorted spread on IN GOD, giving experienced collectors two diagnostically separable forms of doubling on the same die. The proof striking format sharpens these subtle impressions against the mirrored fields, making even the very close Class II spread on IN GOD detectable under moderate magnification.
