Description

Carrying an unusual attribution history, this 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel was formerly listed as WDDO-048 before being redesignated to replace the original WDDO-017, which was delisted as too minor to warrant a separate catalog entry. The current WDDO-017 exhibits close Class II doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the upper E of WE and the first T of TRUST, along with a second die gouge between the upper U and S of TRUST, both positioned within the motto itself. The reverse carries a die dot inside the right arch of Monticello. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this proof variety's reclassification history illustrates the evolving standards within the doubled die attribution community, where catalog numbers are periodically reassigned as earlier entries are reviewed against minimum doubling thresholds. For collectors tracking 1964 proof nickel varieties, the WDDO-048 to WDDO-017 redesignation is an important provenance detail for cross-referencing older attribution records.
