Description

Attributed by John Conway and carrying the Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDO-016 Proof, this Jefferson nickel doubled die obverse is a Class II (Distorted Hub) variety found exclusively on 1964 proof coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin weighs 5.0 grams, measures 21.2 mm in diameter, and is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel. This listing has an interesting catalog history: it was formerly designated WDDO-050 and now replaces the original WDDO-016 listing, which was delisted because the doubling was deemed too minor to warrant a separate catalog entry. The Class II doubling manifests on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, where distortion in the working hub during the die-making process created a subtle but consistent displacement of the lettering. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the upper left of the I in IN and a die gouge to the upper right of the N in IN, both serving as critical attribution points. The reverse of this die pair is separately listed as WWHR-003, indicating it also carries a doubled working hub reverse, making the complete die pair of interest to specialists who collect dual-variety combinations. The 1964 proof Jefferson nickel holds special significance as the final year proof sets were produced at Philadelphia before proof production transferred to San Francisco in 1968, and the last year of the pre-SMS era. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse completes this classic design pairing from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series.
