Description

Classified as Class V pivoted hub doubling, this proof 1964 Jefferson Nickel exhibits a close clockwise spread from a pivot point near the rim at approximately 10 o'clock, with the doubling visible on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date digits. Pivoted hub doubling — Class V in the Wexler classification system — occurs when the hub rotates slightly around a fixed point between hubbing impressions, producing a spread that increases with distance from the pivot. The obverse carries a diagnostic die gouge: a short vertical mark inside the upper right of the Y of LIBERTY. The reverse of this die is separately listed as 1964 Pr 5-cent WDDR-030, meaning both sides of coins struck from this die pair carry documented varieties. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDO-015 Proof, this listing originates from proof production at the Philadelphia Mint during 1964, the final year of the original pre-1965 proof program before it was suspended in favor of Special Mint Sets from 1965 through 1967. The 1964 proof Jefferson Nickel saw enormous production as collectors anticipated the end of silver coinage and stockpiled proof sets, resulting in an unusual concentration of documented die varieties for the date. Proof dies, struck with higher pressure on specially prepared planchets, often reveal subtle doubling that would be invisible on business strikes.
