1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011
ErrorDescription
Certified by John A. Wexler, this 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-011 is classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, producing a close spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Die markers on the obverse include a small die dot on the lower right portion of Jefferson's shoulder. The reverse carries a die dot to the right of the left semicircular arch and a die gouge below NT of CENTS — diagnostics that confirm the specific die pairing. Distorted Hub Doubling results from flexion of the hub under extreme pressure during the sinking process, creating subtle but consistent spread patterns across inscriptions. The 1964 proof sets were struck in record quantities at Philadelphia as the Mint raced to meet collector demand during the coin shortage crisis that would lead to the suspension of proof set production from 1965 through 1967. This makes 1964 proof varieties relatively accessible despite their age. The close spread on the motto requires careful magnification to detect, but the supporting die markers on both sides simplify attribution.
