Description

Displaying a close clockwise spread visible on the top left side of the I of IN, above the right end of the horizontal crossbar of the 4 in the date, and under the horizontal crossbar of the L in LIBERTY, the 1964 Proof WDDO-043 is a hub doubling variety with an unusually well-documented distribution of its doubling across three separate design elements. The fact that the CW spread manifests on the motto (IN), the date (the 4), and LIBERTY simultaneously provides collectors with three independent diagnostic checkpoints for confirming the variety — a significant attribution advantage compared to varieties where doubling is confined to a single area. The close spread designation indicates that the separation between primary and secondary hub images is narrow, requiring careful examination under magnification of at least 10x to detect reliably on the reflective proof surface. On the obverse, no significant die markers have been noted beyond the doubled die itself. The reverse carries a diagnostic short die gouge extending from the rim above the C in AMERICA, serving as a fourth confirmation point.
