1964 Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-040
ErrorDescription
Displaying a close clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 4:00 visible on the LIB of LIBERTY and slightly on IN GOD, the 1964 Proof WDDO-040 is a Class V pivoted hub doubling variety with diagnostic die markers that aid attribution. With the pivot point at 4:00 — in the lower right area of the die — the upper left design elements (LIBERTY and the motto) are farthest from the pivot and therefore show the most pronounced doubling, while elements nearer the pivot display progressively less separation between the primary and secondary images. On the obverse, a small die gouge sits between the lower L and I in LIBERTY, and another small die gouge appears below the R in TRUST. No significant reverse die markers have been noted. The doubling characteristics and die marker locations on this Proof-prefixed entry match those described for the non-Proof-prefixed WDDO-040 (Entry 3 of this batch), suggesting these catalog entries may represent the same die documented under two different title conventions during the import process. Regardless of the cataloging history, the variety itself is confirmed as a proof issue from the 1964 mintage of 3,950,762 cents, struck on dies with a service life of approximately 3,000 impressions. The die gouges near LIBERTY and TRUST provide reliable attribution markers that collectors can verify independently of the doubling pattern. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
