1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Carrying the Wexler Team attribution as WDDO-003 (Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ Pr WDDO-003), this doubled die obverse variety appears on proof strikes from the Philadelphia Mint's 1964 production of 3,950,762 proof cents. Proof coinage in 1964 represented a specialized manufacturing process in which specially prepared dies — chrome-plated and meticulously polished to achieve mirror-like fields — struck each planchet at reduced speed with elevated striking pressure, producing coins with exceptional sharpness and reflective surfaces. The proof die manufacturing process was subject to the same hubbing mechanics as business strike dies: the obverse working hub was pressed into the proof die blank under hydraulic force in multiple impressions, and any displacement between impressions created the doubled die anomaly. However, proof dies had a working life of roughly 3,000 strikes, meaning the total output from any single doubled proof die was severely limited compared to business strike dies that might produce hundreds of thousands of coins. This inherent production constraint makes proof doubled die varieties scarcer than equivalent business strike varieties on a per-die basis. WDDO-003 is the third doubled die obverse cataloged for 1964 proof cents, following WDDO-002 in the proof die sequence. The existence of multiple proof DDO varieties for a single date demonstrates that the hubbing process was susceptible to misalignment regardless of whether the die was destined for proof or business strike service. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 3.11 grams and 19mm diameter.
