1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-044
ErrorDescription
Submitted by Keith Christenson, the 1964 WDDO-044 is a proof doubled die obverse variety that shows slight doubling below the L in LIBERTY. Submitted varieties play an important role in expanding the Wexler catalog, as collectors who discover previously undocumented doubled dies contribute specimens and photographs to the research effort, enabling formal cataloging and cross-referencing. On the reverse, a small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the upper C in CENT, providing a useful attribution marker for collectors attempting to confirm this variety. No significant obverse die markers have been documented beyond the doubled die itself. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ Pr WDDO-044 and attributed by the Wexler Team. The doubling below the L in LIBERTY is consistent with several classes of hub doubling that affect the lower portions of the design, including pivoted and offset varieties where the secondary image shifts downward from the primary. As a proof variety from the 1964 mintage of 3,950,762 cents, WDDO-044 was struck from dies with a service life of approximately 3,000 impressions, placing a firm ceiling on the number of coins carrying this variety. Collectors searching for this variety in 1964 proof sets should examine the base of the L in LIBERTY under at least 10x magnification, then confirm attribution by checking the reverse for the die gouge inside the C of CENT. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
