1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-040

Description

Displaying a close clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 4:00, the 1964 WDDO-040 is a proof doubled die obverse variety that shows doubling on the LIB of LIBERTY and slightly on IN GOD. Class V pivoted hub doubling of this type occurs when the hub rotates around a fixed point during successive impressions into the die — with the pivot at 4:00, design elements in the upper left portion of the die (corresponding to LIBERTY and IN GOD on the coin) are farthest from the pivot and display the most pronounced separation between primary and secondary images. The obverse carries two diagnostic die gouges: one between the lower L and I in LIBERTY, and another below the R in TRUST. On the reverse, no significant die markers have been noted.
