Description

Standing as one of the most remarkable entries in the entire 1964 Lincoln cent doubled die catalog, WDDO-037 is a dual variety — its obverse die carries a doubled die obverse while its reverse die is simultaneously a doubled die reverse, listed independently as 1964 1¢ Pr WDDR-116. Finding both a DDO and a DDR on the same coin is exceptionally uncommon, as it requires two separate dies in the same press to each have received misaligned hub impressions during their independent manufacturing processes. The obverse displays a close clockwise spread from a pivot point at 10:00, manifesting as an extra bar above the right end of the horizontal crossbar of the 4 in the date. The hub was most likely tilted when this image was formed, classifying this as a Class VIII tilted hub doubling — one of the less frequently encountered doubling classes. A die scratch runs from west-southwest to east-northeast above and between the W and E of WE on the obverse. The reverse of this die pair is independently cataloged as WDDR-116, meaning collectors who possess this variety actually hold two attributed doubled dies on a single coin. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ Pr WDDO-037 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this proof variety was struck from the 1964 mintage of 3,950,762 proof cents using dies with a service life of approximately 3,000 strikes, placing a hard ceiling on the number of coins that could carry this dual variety. The convergence of proof strike quality, a tilted hub DDO, and an independently doubled reverse die makes this variety a premium target for advanced collectors pursuing the most unusual and significant pieces in the 1964 Lincoln cent error spectrum. Struck on a polished 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
